Section One - Part B French Bread Bread is very important in France and there are dozens (des dizaines actually means "10's of") of different kinds. In the U.S., we are familiar with the baguette, but there other types called la flute, la miche, le bâtard, la ficelle. All French traditional breads are made with wheat flour. The French language is full of expressions that have to do with bread. Here are a few: - être trempé comme une soupe : this expressions means to be drenched. It comes from the fact that originally, la soupe (soup) didn't mean the liquid dish we eat, but it was the name for the bread that you dunked in it. - manger son pain blanc : this expression means "to have the best of something." - Ça ne mange pas de pain : this means that an event did not have major consequences. Although the French still eat a lot of bread, the consumption has dropped considerably since the beginning of the 20th century. In 1900, the French ate an average of 900 grammes of bread per day while in 2002, they ate about 165 grammes per day. |
