We have all heard it: “Exercise is good for you,” which is true in general. Regular physical activity and physical fitness make important contributions to one's health, sense of well-being, and maintenance of healthy body weight. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles resulting in energy expenditure. In most states in this country, less than half of its residents meet the recommendations for physical activity.

But what is a healthy amount of physical activity? What is exercise really doing for our bodies, and more importantly, to our bodies? What are healthy ways to incorporate exercise into our lives? The answers to these questions are as varied in opinion as there are with nutrition and diet advice; yet, there are reliable sources of information for the public.

In adopting an active lifestyle, it is important to gage what is right for your needs and goals. In this unit we will explore the impact of exercise on your body. We will discuss how to incorporate physical fitness into your overall wellness. We will tie together physical fitness and how it influences your nutritional needs. We will also look at sports nutrition, supplements, and the nutritional needs of an athlete for optimal performance.
