Nutrition and Energy Pathways: Introduction
In this section we will learn about the nutrients which are vital to athletes and people who enjoy physical fitness. Carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals all play specific roles in supplying energy in times of increased activity. The food choices we make are therefore essential in meeting our dietary goals as they relate to sports nutrition. The need for dietary supplements will also be briefly discussed. Use of the glycemic index for selecting carbohydrate sources before, during, and after exercise will be illustrated. The micronutrients, which are small in size but essential in their functions, will be discussed. Lastly, we will outline the metabolic pathways of energy and the specific conditions the body utilizes them to burn its “fuel.”
