Section Two - Part C

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg is a well preserved medieval town in Bavaria, Germany. It is surrounded by walls that were built to defend the city over the ages. These walls still stand and can be walked along today. There is a 24 hour webcam overlooking the city from the town square and can be viewed here.

Personal Pronouns

A personal pronoun can be used to replace a noun, but it must agree with the gender and case of the noun it is replacing. You have learned that nominative pronouns replace nouns that are the subject of the sentence; accusative pronouns replace direct object nouns; and dative pronouns replace indirect object nouns. This table can help you keep all of the different forms straight:

  SINGULAR PLURAL
NOM ich du er sie es wir ihr sie Sie
ACC mich dich ihn sie es uns euch sie Sie
DAT mir dir ihm ihr ihm uns euch ihnen Ihnen

Übung

Practice using personal pronouns. Substitute the correct personal pronoun for the noun in bold. Click on the sentence to check your answer.

1. Ich schreibe meinem Bruder eine Karte.
2. Er gibt dem Mathelehrer die Hausaufgaben.
3. Wir zeigen meiner Mutter das Haus.
4. Schickst du mir die Bücher?
5. Ich kaufe den Kindern ein Geschenk.
6. Gib mir bitte das Buch.
7. Thomas und Ingo zeigen uns das Museum.
8. Ich gebe meinem Vater einen Computer.
9. Kaufst du deinen Eltern ein neues Auto?
10. Meine Freundin Maria kauft uns Eis im Cafe.

Sehr gut! You probably noticed a change in word order in sentences 2, 4, 6 and 8. Whenever a noun and a pronoun appear together in the same sentence, the personal pronoun usually comes first.

Now go on to Part D.
