Introduction
Welcome to Lektion Sechs
Neuschwanstein
Schloss Neuschwanstein is a late 19th century castle in Germany, near Hohenschwangau and Füssen in southwest Bavaria, not far from the Austrian border. It is said to be the most photographed building in the world, and is one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations. Neuschwanstein is one of three castles built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as "Mad King Ludwig," or "The Fairy Tale King." Only one third of the castle had been completed before Ludwig's death in 1886.
Willkommen! Das Thema für Lektion Sechs ist Das Haus.
Each unit in this course is divided into three sections. Each section will
contain material that will build upon material that was presented in the
previous section. It will be very important for you to work consistently and
in order as you continue to build your skills in German, beginning right
here, with the sixth unit of this second year of study.
In Das Haus you will learn to:
- talk about your house (rooms and furnishings)
- talk about activities that happened in the past
- learn additional cognate patterns
- learn about homes in other countries
- continue to develop conversational skills in German
Icon Symbols
As you work, you will see icon symbols that identify the kind of activity you are doing. Check them here, Look at an explanation here.
Die Umlaute
You will remember that writing in German requires the use of spelling marks that are not used in English. These are called Umlaute in German. These spelling
marks over vowels are part of the actual spelling of the word and should be included at all times if the word requires it. How are you going to learn which
words need an Umlaut? For now, just memorize the word with its spelling mark. You will need to make these marks when you turn in written assignments to your teacher.
There is an explanation in the Course Home section, and it is repeated here. Learn how to make Umlaute here.
