More Vocabulary Practice La Farandole La Farandole dates back to the Middle Ages. The word comes from the Provençal farandoulo which was a troupe of traveling comedians. It is linear chain-dance still danced in the south of France. In la Farandole, there is a linked line of dancers moving forward. It can be danced to any music as long as it has a regular rhythm. The important part is the pattern the dancers make in space. The most characteristic feature is the arch. The circular version was know as the Carole, from which our word "carols" derives. Religious texts were set to traditional carole tunes. Some farandole tunes are played with a fife and some with bagpipes. Listen. |
