Some ergogenic aids can have harmful side effects and are banned by sports governing bodies because they are unsafe. The most abused ergogenic aids include the following:

  • Steroids are used to increase muscle mass and strength. These can cause heart, liver, and problems with the immune and reproductive systems. Behavior changes may include aggression, paranoia, mood swings, and lowered sex drive.
  • Blood doping is when blood products are given to improve endurance or speed. Side effects can include strokes, allergic reactions, and infections.
  • Human growth hormone is widely abused by body builders to increase muscle mass. The side effects are heart and nerve diseases, glucose intolerances, and higher levels of blood fats.
  • Caffeine affects the central nervous system by increasing mental alertness and reducing fatigue. If over-used it can cause restlessness, irritability, diarrhea, insomnia, and anxiety.
