key concept Womit? Damit!
No, these don't mean what they look or sound like. We use them to get your attention as we introduce a structural concept called wo-compounds and da-compounds. As usual, there are two aspects: the forms themselves and how they're used. Let's see if you can guess how to form them just by looking at some examples (in addition to the pair above):

wofürdafür
wodurchdadurch
woraufdarauf
worindarin
wovondavon
worausdaraus

First of all: what are the wo- and da- compounded with?

You said, "a preposition," right?

Secondly, you noticed that it was sometimes wor- and dar- instead of just plain wo- and da-. Can you figure out when to use which one? Look carefully.

Did you say, "It's got the -r when the preposition begins with a vowel"? Right again!

So try making up the compounds for these prepositions. Click to see if you're right.

da + gegenanswer (arrow) wo + überanswer (arrow)
wo + ananswer (arrow) wo + gegenanswer (arrow)
da + überanswer (arrow) da + ananswer (arrow)
wo + voranswer (arrow) wo + nebenanswer (arrow)
wo + unteranswer (arrow) da + voranswer (arrow)
da + nebenanswer (arrow) da + unteranswer (arrow)
wo + nachanswer (arrow) da + nachanswer (arrow)

"OK," you say, "that's easy enough. But when do we use these things?" A very good question! Again, let's see if you can answer it after looking at some examples.

Womit fährst du in the Stadt?

What did you guess about the use of wo-compounds?

They are used at the beginning of questions.
They mean "what + preposition."

In super-formal English it would be "preposition + what", but we normal

people say things like:

"What's she looking forward to?"
not: "To what is she looking forward?"

Since we're also learning some verb + preposition vocabulary in this unit, let's practice the two together.

practice Üben wir

activity Bevor wir mit den da-compounds weitermachen, machen wir eine Vokabeln-Pause. Übe nun die opinion flashcards.

key concept Weiter geht's!
Now go back and look at the answers to the six wo-questions above. What can you say about the meanings of the da-compounds? Did you come up with the formula: (preposition) + it / them? If so, you were right.

practice Üben wir!

key concept The important thing to remember is that these are used for things, not people. If you want to ask a questons with "who" (NOT "what") + preposition, you continue to use the preposition + wen/wem pattern you already know. If you have a sentence with a preposition + him/her/them (persons), continue to use the prepositon + pronoun (D/A) that you already know.
