Most young people long for a space of their own. This space often comes when they get their first apartment. Along with having one’s very own apartment, many other responsibilities arise, like getting a bank account and learning how to take care of repairs.
Young adults in Germany experience the same types of things. Young men, for example, who are involved in Zivildienst, must provide housing during their months of service. As you learned in Stufe 2, young adults are able to sign their own leases at the age of 18. This allows many of these young men to find the housing that they need.
What is involved in getting apartment? What types of things need to be done? In this section, you will learn how to talk about what goes into moving into that first apartment.
