school

Students at the University of Cologne head off to class as they prepare for their futures. A university education is on the list of desired accomplishments of many students around the world. Getting there takes a lot of time and effort. In Germany, students at a Gymnasium must first successfully pass the Abitur before being granted permission to study at the university. Years of hard work pay off as students complete their exams and make decisions about their next step. However, just as in the US, before that next step is taken, there is a bit of celebrating!

practice Gymnasium Carolinum- largest Gymnasium in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Before you begin new vocabulary in Unit 3, let's take a few minutes to fully understand what type of a school a Gymnasium is and what the Abitur is, a bit of its history and what it means to students when they pass it.

Go to www.wikipedia.org and do an article search for both Gymnasium and Abitur. Read the articles and then answer the following questions for your teacher:

  1. What are 2 facts about a Gymnasium that you didn't know previously?
  2. What are 2 facts about the Abitur that you didn't know previously?
Diese Aufgabe hat 8 Punkte.

activity As you have learned in both your brief research and the opening vocabulary presentation, responsibilities for German students in their last year at the Gymnasium and preparations for the Abitur can be intense. Along with the hard work comes a bit of fun also. It can be compared a bit to the high school activities that seniors take part in. Just for fun, check out the list of Abi activities and see if you can match them up!
