These focus subjects, or Leistungskurse, are decided upon in the few years leading up to their last year. Most states require these Leistungskurse to meet 5 to 6 class periods a week. One of the focus areas must be in German, math, foreign language or science. The second focus area can be of their choosing. The remaining courses that the students enroll in are called Grundkurse, or basic courses. Most of these classes meet three times a week. The Abitur, the degree received by the students at the Gymnasium, has been likened to an associate's degree from a community college in the US.
