review Review "quiz"
No two students come to this course with exactly the same background, even if they've taken the previous online courses. Therefore, Units 1 and 2 contain a lot of review material and activities. Before getting too far into German 3a, let's see what you already know. Remember that learning a language is a cumulative skill, and repetition is essential.

This next activity will help you not only see where you might need more practice, but it will also help you learn how the quizzes work in this course. Don't worry; it doesn't have many points. Review Quiz. Diese Aufgabe hat 23 Punkte.

key concepts If you did poorly on any part of the "quiz," click on Grammatik at the top of this page and find the relevant section. If you recognize quickly what your mistake was (and why), spend some time practicing that portion of the grammar. If a mistake is unclear to you, ask your teacher what you can do to improve in that area.

key concept Lesestrategien
In German 3 you will be reading longer passages than were typical in German 2. Does that mean we expect you to "translate" everything in a Lesestück? By no means! Unless you are told otherwise, the reading passages are for comprehension purposes. You will often be asked questions about a text, but you will not be asked to "translate" it. So let's look at some good strategies for this kind of reading. They are really the same ones you'd use in reading a passage in a textbook for any class.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO "READ" THE TEXT, FOLLOW THESE STEPS (they will save you time and probably frustration):

  • Make sure you understand the title.
  • Look for section titles so you know where the breaks are.
  • Look at any pictures and Kulturelle Leckerbissen ("cultural tidbits") as a kind of "warm up" activity.
  • Look at any questions you're to answer. They often give an overview of the content.
  • See if there are definitions given at the bottom of the texts. In this course they are indicated by a ° (degree sign).
  • If the passage is shorter than one page, read it through quickly (while listening to it, if it is recorded), in order to get a general idea of what's being presented. DO NOT STOP TO LOOK UP ANY WORDS!
  • As soon as you have finished, look up any unfamiliar words that kept re-occurring. They are probably important.
  • Then read the text for the purpose of answering the questions or fulfilling some other task assigned.

culture Ein Reisebericht (Travel report or journal)
postcardHave you ever taken a trip and recorded your experiences somehow? Some may write postcards to family and friends and others may record it for themselves in a travel journal. In this unit, you will be reading excerpts from a travel journal and following a young man from Germany named Oliver Krietsch, as he and his family travel the famous Romantic Road in southern Germany. You will read about some of the history of the places he visits along with the sites he sees. Enjoy! One day you too may visit some of the same places that Oliver and his family visit.

Before you read, take a minute and read briefly about this famous stretch of road in Germany, the Romantic Road. (The underlined phrases in the reading passages are links to the sounds. Please listen as you read.)

Unser Mietwagen war ein Volkswagen Passat. Er war total spitze und groß genug für alles.
