Section One - Part C You may recall from previous lessons that prepositions describing location (auf, in, neben, etc.) are followed by dative case. You saw several examples of this in the presentation you viewed in Part B: Ein Teppich liegt auf dem Boden; Neben dem Fernseher steht ein Stuhl; Wir kochen in der Küche. These all refer to location, answering the question Wo? In the following exercises you will learn how these same prepositions, when describing the active placement or destination of something, use the accusative case. These prepositional phrases answer the question Wohin (where to)? Wohin stellst du. . . ? Answer each question with an accusative prepositional phrase, using the words in ( ). Click on the question to check your answer.
Sehr gut! Wasn't that easy? Now let's practice saying where the things above are located. Answer each question with a dative prepositional phrase, using the words in ( ).
Prima! You probably noticed a change in the verbs used between the first group of questions and the second. Stellen (to put or place) and legen (to lay) indicate activity/movement, while sein (to be), stehen (to stand) and liegen (to lie) refer to a permanent or stationary condition. You can get important clues about which case to use in your prepositional phrases by making note of the verbs used before them. Schreibaufgabe Answer the questions below in complete German sentences, using 2-way prepositions auf, in or neben. (10 Punkte)
