Section Three - Part A "Ich lade dich ein." In German-speaking countries, if you tell a friend "Ich lade dich ein" that means that you are going to pay for whatever it is you are inviting them to do. Also remember that if you were in a German-speaking country and making plans to do something with a friend, you most likely would not be depending on your own vehicles to get where you are going. Remember that in most German-speaking countries, teenagers are not allowed to drive until the age of eighteen. You would have to rely on public transportation or .....walk. Die Einladung There are many expressions you can use to accept or decline an invitation. You have learned to use "gern" with a verb to indicate you like )or like to do) things, but the basic meaning of "gern" is "gladly,"so it's often used to accept an inviation. Here are some others. Möchtest du mit mir ins Kino gehen? Sicher! Möchtest du heute Golf spielen? Natürlich! Möchtest du mit mir spazieren gehen? Aber gern! All three of these expressions are a way of saying "of course." Now, to decline an invitation, you may want to not only decline the invitation but also offer some excuse as to why you are not accepting. Here are some expressions you will want to use. Möchtest du heute mit mir ins Kino gehen? Ich kann nicht. Ich habe schon etwas vor. Vielleicht morgen? Möchtest du am Samstag Tennis spielen? Das geht nicht. Ich muss auf meinen Bruder aufpassen. Möchtest du mit mir ins Konzert gehen? Schade, nein! Ich muss meine Großeltern besuchen. Möchtest du nach der Schule ins Cafe gehen? Leider nein. Ich habe zu viele Hausaufgaben. Practice Activity Do this practice activity to see if you have a good grasp on invitations in German. Schriftliche Übung Prepare this assignment for your teacher. Accept the first four invitations and then decline the others. Use expressions from this page, but write complete sentences in German you have learned in this course.
