Section One - Part A Willkommen! Das Thema für Lektion 8 ist "Das Essen." The food in this picture is Wiener Schnitzel, a breaded veal cutlet, fried and served with lemon. If there is such a thing as a "typical" German dish, Schnitzel is probably it. It can be found on just about every restaurant menu, and it is served at home as well. We'll learn more about the numerous kinds of Schnitzel later in the unit. In this unit, we are going to talk about foods that are typical to German speaking countries. Different foods are typical in different parts of the countries, but some things (like Schnitzel) you will find everywhere. Many people think that Germans consume nothing but sausages, Sauerkraut, and beer, but that is far from true. There are gourmet chefs all over the country, producing numerous elegant dishes. Also, today's German -- like most Europeans -- is (and has been) quite health conscious, so the farmers' markets (and the produce sections of supermarkets) still are very popular. Although Bäckereien (bakeries) and Konditoreien (pastry shops) still flourish, people walk a lot and are otherwise quite active, so you almost never see an obese German.
