Key ConceptSubject personal pronoun review
In Unit 2, we learned all of the subject pronouns. Let's review those. Try to remember what they were, then look at the chart below to see if you can fill in the German equivalents. Click on the subject pronoun in English to see its equivalent German pronoun.

I we
you you (plural familiar)

he

they
she
it you (formal)

Did you remember those? If not, perhaps you are going too quickly through the material and should do more activities in review or warm-up as you begin each day.

Lesestück (Reading practice)
Read the paragraph and see if you can answer the questions that follow in English:

Ich heiße Gabi, und ich bin sechzehn Jahre alt. Was machst du gern im Sommer? Ich besuche gern Freunde, und wir gehen gern einkaufen oder ins Kino. Ich habe heißes Wetter gern, aber ich mähe nicht gern den Rasen! Ich fahre gern rad oder schwimme am Wochenende. Machst du auch gern Sport? Ich lese gern oder telefoniere mit Freunden am Abend. Manchmal (sometimes) sehe ich fern.

1. How old is Gabi?
2. What does she like to do with her friends?
3. What kind of weather does she like?
4. What is something she doesn’t like to do?
5. What kinds of sports does she participate in?
6. What does Gabi do in the evenings?

Let's talk some more about verbs! If you were being very observant, you probably noticed a few more verbs that behaved differently than the regular verbs we've been practicing. Take a look:

Some verbs work together, like einkaufen gehen (to go shopping) and spazieren gehen (to go walking). While they can also be used alone, it's sometimes easier to use them this way, because you only need to remember how to conjugate gehen, and you don't need to do anything to the other verb. (Ich gehe spazieren, du gehst spazieren, er geht spazieren...you get the idea!)

Other verbs can split themselves apart, like radfahren and fernsehen. These are called “separable prefix” verbs, because the prefix (here rad and fern) breaks off and goes to the end of the sentence.

And finally, there are some sneaky verbs that change the vowel in their stem. (Do you remember that the “stem” of a verb is the part that you add the endings to when you conjugate?) These verbs are appropriately called “stem-changing” verbs, and they just need to be memorized. But the good news is that they only change their vowels in the du and the er/sie/es forms! The stem-changing verbs in our new activities are lesen, fern sehen, and rad fahren. Watch the changes that they make:

Homework ActivityBefore we go on...let's talk
Before you continue on to Part D, go to the discussion board and ask two questions in German to your classmates. Ask someone if they do at least two different activities. Respond to someone's post there. If there are no posts to respond to yet, go back in a day or so and then you will be able to respond. This assignment is worth 8 points.

Go on to Part D.
