More practice with questions
Now that you've learned about the different ways of asking questions in German, let's review a little bit. How do you usually begin a question if you are seeking specific information? That's right—an interrogative pronoun ! Sometime we call interrogative pronouns “question words” to help us remember what they are. You will also notice that they all start with “W”, just like most of their English counterparts.

Wer – who Wer ist das? Wer bist du?

Was – what Was ist das?

Wo – where Wo wohnst du? Wo wohnt Alexander? Wo ist die Schule?

Woher – where from Woher kommst du?

Wohin – where to Wohin gehen Sie, Frau Stern? Wohin reist du gern?

Wann – when Wann gehst du nach Hause? Wann geht ihr zur Schule?

Warum – why Warum lernst du Deutsch? Warum ist es so kalt?

Wie – how Wie heisst du? Wie heisst er? Wie geht es dir?

Wieviel - how much Wieviel kostet das Buch?

Wie viele - how many Wie viele Bücher hast du? Wie viele CDs hat Anne?

Have you noticed that the verb almost always comes right after the question word? The exception is wie viele, because it is a word questioning the number of items.

Try these practice exercises. Use the answers given as clues.

Questions using Inverted Word Order
What do all “yes / no” questions start with? That's right—a verb! You learned in the last section that questions requiring only a yes or no answer use inverted word order, which simply means that the subject and verb switch places, but that all other parts of the sentence stay the same.

Beispiele

Dieter wohnt in Berlin. Wohnt Dieter in Berlin? (Does Dieter live in Berlin?)

Dieter kauft einen Regenschirm. Kauft Dieter einen Regenschirm? (Is Dieter buying an umbrella?)

Dieter ist 16 Jahre alt. Ist Dieter 16 Jahre alt? (Is Dieter 16 years old?)

Rewrite the following sentences as questions using inverted word order.

1. Helmut schwimmt am Montag.
2. Lena spielt Fußball.
3. Christian fährt am Wochenende rad.
4. Frau Meier singt gut.
5. Petra hat die Schule gern.
6. Wir gehen morgen spazieren.

If you wanted more than just a yes or no answer, how could you form questions using interrogative pronouns to get the information provided in the statements above?

Homework ActivityWriting Assignment
Prepare this assignment for your teacher. Create two questions about the information presented in each statement. One question should use inverted word order, and one question should use an interrogative pronoun. This assignment is worth 16 points.


1. Franz ist 13.

2. Dieter reist nach Frankfurt.

3. Sophie wohnt in München.

4. Herr und Frau Schmidt schwimmen am Samstag.

5. Lena hat Christian gern.

6. Hans kommt aus der Schweiz.

7. Alex ist in der Schule.
