We have talked briefly about cognates before. During this semester of French, we'll continuing learning these words which are a great help to those learning a second language. There are many patterns among cognates that can help us add to our vocabulary without having to really learn new words.

Words that end in -tion in English generally end in -tion in French. These words sound very different from their English equivalents. Observe and listen to the pronunciation by clicking on the word:

la nation the nation
la constitution the constitution

These French words that end in -tion are always feminine. Also pay close attention to the pronunciation -- the "tion" sounds like "s" and never "sh". See if you can give the French equivalents of the following words in English. Click on each one to see if you are correct.

QuébecWriting Assignment

In this semester, you are going to prepare a project about a specific topic for each unit. The project will be done in phases throughout the unit with several deadlines in order to help you stay focused and organized. In this unit, your research project is going to be about Québec. You will include the following information about Québec:

  • Québec's province and capital city.
  • Geographical make-up of the area.
  • How many people live there.
  • What the people there do for recreation.
  • What the people do there for a living, in general.
  • Some basics about the current government of Québec.
  • You need to have an essay in English of at least 200 words.
  • You are to find some pictures of either typical or tourist attractions in Québec and make a picture essay complete with captions about what you find. You need to find at least 5 pictures that are representative of different aspects of Québec people or life. You may include one person in your picture essay.

There are four deadlines for the project:

  1. Deadline 1: Your brainstorming and ideas for the project (5 points)
  2. Deadline 2: Your outline (5 points)
  3. Deadline 3: Your rough draft (5 points)
  4. Deadline 4: Final project due. (25 points)
