Skim over both documents: Open 5.05 Civil Rights. Compare and contrast the two documents citing evidence from each source; then, write a response about the two. When you finish your work, submit to the 5.05 Civil Rights Dropbox. Criteria:
Relate to your life . . . . Is there anyone in your life who best relates to a character in the novel? Why? What is your relation to the character? Hopefully, you now see some strong connections between real-life historical events that were happening around the publication of the novel and the events of Tom Robinson’s trial. Atticus makes the point that when a white man’s word is against a black man’s word, the white man’s word will win. Is there anywhere this is still true today? Could this be the case why we characterize Tom as a mockingbird in the novel? In a three-paragraph essay use precise words and phrases, quotations from the novel, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of Tom Robinson as a victim of society. As you characterize Tom, be sure to use mockingbird as a metaphor. Since this essay will rely heavily on the novel, we should use the novel as our primary source. After the creative title you choose for your essay, place this reference to the novel. For each quotation you use, put the page number inside parentheses at the end of the quotation and after the quotation marks. ExampleLee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. Theme is a broad idea that an author inserts into his or her novel. This idea or message can be applied to life; however, the idea is not stated. You, as the reader, must infer what the theme of the novel is. There are a few questions that will help you find the theme to your novel:
Determining the theme is important, but it is extra important with your book club novel. Your multi-genre portfolio will be based on your novel’s theme.
