Rights

Have you ever wondered about your rights as a human being? As a citizen, you have human rights and civil rights, but what is the difference?

Human rights are essentially your rights for being alive. You have the right to life, education, and protection from torture. These human rights are a set of promises made by governments to look after their citizens. The nations created these laws after the Nazis tried to exterminate the Jews and other groups. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted.

Read the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On the other hand, civil rights protect citizens from discrimination and grant certain freedoms such as speech, due process, equal protection, etc.

The European Convention on Human Rights was written in 1950. Read Article 14.

The United States came forth with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and in the workplace based on race, color, sex, and religion.

Reading

Read Chapters 16-19.

Atticus

When it comes to manly characters in literature, Atticus Finch always comes to mind. He is a gentleman is a three piece suit, a widower with two children quiet, polite, a lawyer who uses his mind instead of his fists, and always walks away from insults. He does not gamble or smoke. He prefers walking to driving. More than anything, Atticus loves to bury himself in a great book. Atticus may not fit the definition of “manly" to some, but he is truly a man of character. He treats everyone with respect, even if that person does not seemingly deserve it.

Atticus is truly a man of integrity. Look back in the text and locate three quotations that represent Atticus as a man of integrity. You will use these quotes as we continue reading the novel, so feel free to add to your list as we move through the novel.

Here is an example of a quotation: “This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience-Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help this man."
