Cómo expresar el negativo

Hay diferentes expresiones para expresar el negativo en español. Escucha y lee estas preguntas y respuestas.

¿Estudias algo?	No, no estudio nada.
¿Hablas con alguien?	No, no hablo con nadie.
¿Viajas a alguna parte?	No, no viajo a ninguna parte.
¿Siempre cantas en francés?	No, no canto nunca en francés. Nunca canto en francés.
¿Tienes algunos amigos en China?	No, no tengo ningunos amigos en China.
¿Hablas ruso o chino?	No, no hablo ni ruso ni chino.
¿Entiendes bien la lección?	¡No, no entiendo para nada!

Yo estudio. Yo no estudio.

1. The most common negative expression is no. No goes directly before the verb.

Yo estudié. Yo no estudié.

2. Remember that in the pretérito, the order doesn't change for the past tense.

Yo no quiero trabajar. (I don't want to work.)

Yo quiero no trabajar. (What I want is not to work.)

3. If there's a conjugated verb and an infinitive in the same sentence, no goes with the verb that is being negated. If it's a conjugated verb, it goes in front; if it's an infinitive, it precedes it.

4. Most negative expressions follow a slightly different pattern as. Most negative expressions in Spanish require the use of what appears to us to be a double negative.

no...ninguno	not a single/not any/none	Él no tiene ningún amigo.	He doesn't have a single friend.
no...nunca	never	Ella no viajó nunca sola.	She never travelled alone.
no...nadie	nobody	No hay nadie aquí.	There is nobody here.
no...nada	nothing	Yo no tengo nada que comer.	I have nothing to eat.
ya no	no longer, no more	Nosotros ya no tenemos leche.	We have no more milk.
no...ni...ni	neither/nor	Ella no llama ni a su hermano ni a su hermana.	She calls neither her brother nor her sister.
no...todavía	not yet	Uds. no están listos todavía.	You're not yet ready to leave.
no..para nada	not at all/not a thing	Tú no entiendes para nada.	You don't understand a thing!

Nunca is a special case. You can use nunca as used above: Ella no viajó nunca sola. Or it can be used before the verb, without the no. Ella nunca viajó sola.
