Las Cuevas de Altamira
Las cuevas de Altamira, famosas por sus pinturas prehistóricas, están situadas al oeste de Santander, en el norte de España. The cave, discovered by a hunter in 1868, was visited by Marcelino de Sautuola in 1875. He was a noble from Santander who found animal bones in the caves. Sautuola returned in the summer of 1879 and during that visit, his daughter was the first person to see that there were paintings of bulls or bison on the ceiling of the cave. Convinced of the authenticity of the paintings and objects in the cave, Sautuola published descriptions of what they had found in 1880. Spanish and foreign experts at first thought that the paintings were not authentic and finally, in the first decade of the twentieth century, they were accepted to be genuine.
These caves are a small representative of the wonders found all over the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain.
