Key ConceptSport treiben
We know how to say the names of various sports, and we know how to say we play any one of them (spielen), but the English word "sports" can be a bit tricky. It can be the plural of "sport," as in "I play three sports," but it can also mean "athletics," a generic term than has no singular form. Let's make sure you know the German for all of these possibilities.

If you're talking about a single sport, you can use the singular: "Ich spiele nur einen Sport: Tennis."

The plural of this is "Sportarten" (i.e."kinds of sports"), as in "Unsere Schule hat die Meisterschaft in drei Sportarten gewonnen." ("Our school won the championship in three sports.")

Sometimes in English we say that someone "does/is involved in sports," or we ask "Do you do sports?" The German phrase for this is Sport treiben, as in "Treibst du gern Sport?" ("Do you like to do sports?" ) or "Sie treibt viel Sport" ("She does sports a lot./She's very athletic.") That last sentence doesn't have to imply that she's in a LOT of sports, just that she spends a lot of time in athletics. It could be one sport or many.

The words aus and mit are two of the prepositions that are always followed by the dative case (form). Here is the full list for this unit.
