cultureDas Schuljahr
What is your school year like? Most of you probably begin classes around the end of August or beginning of September and go until the end of May or into June. You may have a week or two of vacation at the end of December and another week in the spring, but otherwise you go to school pretty much straight through from September to June.

Some of you, however, are on a "year-round-schedule," where your summer break is shorter (6-8 weeks rather than 10-12), but you may have 3 longer breaks (2-3 weeks) during the year. The number of weeks of school is the same; they're just spread out differently.

The year-round-schedule is more like the European schedule. In the German-speaking countries, many students have a fall break (Herbstferien, 10-14 days), about three weeks for vacation at Christmas time (Weihnachtsferien) and then about a two-week break at Easter (Osterferien). In addition, there are other one-day holidays, depending on which Bundesland the school is in. The summer vacation (Sommerferien) is then only 6 weeks long, and it can begin anywhere from June to August. The states rotate when their Sommerferien are, so not all Germans are on the road at once!

Key ConceptWie kommst du zur Schule?
Speaking of being on the road, how do you get to school each day? Do you drive? Do you go on a school bus? Do you walk? Let's see how we could express these things in German.

Taxi Subway School bus Car Walking

There are a couple of other ways you could say you go somewhere, but it isn't likely that you would go to school in these ways.

Boat Airplane Train Motorcycle
