Introduction

Willkommen!
Das Thema für Lektion 10 ist "Die Schule und Pflichten"

Was machst du in der Schule? Was machst du zu Hause?

A typical German school day ends around 1:00, but that doesn't always mean a student's work ends! In addition to the types of household chores that might also be expected of you, the average Gymnasium student has 2-3 hours of Hausaufgaben to do each night. In our last unit you are going to learn more about schools in the German-speaking countries, and about a typical school day for a German-speaking student. You'll also learn about different chores and responsibilities teenagers have at home, and about what a typical German home looks like. Viel Spaß und viel Erfolg!

school

Wie kommst du zur Schule? Outside most schools in the German-speaking countries you're sure to find lots of bikes. Students who live near the school either walk or ride a bike; students who live farther away usually catch a regular city bus. There is no house-to-house bus service. You won't find many student vehicles in a school parking lot, because the driving age is 18-the age when students are almost ready to leave school!

These Schüler probably look a bit younger than the students in your own high school classes, don't they? While school systems vary from state to state, the Gymnasium (college preparatory school) traditionally starts with grade 5 and ends with grade 12 or 13. A student who chooses to enter the Gymnasium after Grundschule (elementary school), already has his or her sights set on working toward admission to a university, and is prepared to work hard for the next 8-9 years.

Lektion Zehn
Congratulations again! You have now almost finished the course. It is a wonderful thing to learn another language and learn about another culture. It is important that you learn about the world that you are living in. You must keep in mind that fluency in German (or any foreign language) does not happen over night. It may seem to be a very slow process to you but it is one that is achieved the more you practice and seek ways to use your new skills.

In Die Schule und Pflichten you will:

  • talk more about schools and school activities in the German-speaking world
  • learn to talk about your school day in more detail
  • learn to talk about your house
  • learn to talk about chores and responsibilities you have at home
  • review verb structures we have had in this year of German
  • learn additional cognate patterns

As you work, keep in mind the symbols that will help you to remember what it is you are going to be doing throughout the course. If you have forgotten those, you can look back at them to keep them in mind.
