SongUne chanson
We learn lots of songs when we are children to help us learn to do a variety of things. Young French-speaking children also learn songs like this. The song we are going to learn in this unit is like that. It is a song that little children learn when learning to count but it is a catchy one and you will enjoy learning it.

Alouette, gentille Alouette
Alouette je te plumerai
Alouette, gentille Alouette
Alouette je te plumerai
Je te plumerai la tête
Je te plumerai la tête
Et la tête, et la tête
Alouette, Alouette
O-o-o-o-oh
Alouette, gentille Alouette
Alouette je te plumerai

Je te plumerai le nez
Je te plumerai les yeux
Je te plumerai le cou
Je te plumerai les ailes
Je te plumerai le dos
Je te plumerai les pattes
Je te plumerai la queue

Lark, nice Lark (or Lark, lovely Lark)
Lark, I am going to pluck you
I am going to pluck your head,
I am going to pluck your head,
And the head, and the head,
O-o-o-o-oh

All the verses are the same except the part of the body.
La tête - the head
Le nez - the nose
Les yeux - the eyes
Le cou - the neck
Les ailes - the wings
Le dos - the back
Les pattes - the legs
Le queue - the tail

The song is actually about "plucking" the feathers from a lark, presumably in preparation for cooking. A lark is considered to be a small "game bird" (a game bird is a bird considered to be suitable for food).

You can listen to the song several times. When you feel confident, record yourself saying or singing the first verse in French to send to your teacher. Ce devoir vaut 16 points.

D'autres mots apparentés
Remember that cognates are the words that we find to be very "user-friendly." Look at these to learn additional words that are effortless to learn. Be sure to listen to them over and over again so that you can become proficient with their pronunciation.

Words that end in -or in English generally end in -eur in French (with some exceptions for femenine forms).

actor l'acteur
color la couleur

Words that end in -al in English are generally the same in French, with sometimes minor exceptions.

animal l'animal
hospital l'hôpital

Words that end in -ible in English are generally the same in French.

terrible terrible
horrible horrible
impossible impossible

The pronunciation of these words does change, but they are relatively easy to learn because of their resemblance to English.

CultureImagine you are going to be in France and you want to visit the island of Corsica. Use these websites to plan a 3-4 day itinerary of what things you would do. Choose a hotel and sites that you would see. You may only spend one day on the beach. Include the prices for how you will get to the island and back to France. Ce devoir vaut 35 points.

There are four deadlines for this project.

The second one is due now--your outline of your research project is due to your teacher (5 points).

You are now ready for the Section Quiz. When you are done, go on to Section Three.
