Getting Started

Welcome to the class!
Your decision to learn another language is a good one, and we want to make sure that you have the best possible learning experience. These pages will guide you through the basic information you need to be successful in the course.

Your Teacher
Your teacher will post contact information and class policies on the site. Look at all of these carefully. Make sure you know how to contact your teacher, and be sure you understand his or her policies. Make sure you understand the class schedule so that you know when things are due. If you begin the class without knowing these things, contact your teacher immediately.

Class Content
Both the Syllabus and the Content Standards for the class will tell you what the class is about and what you are expected to learn. Take a look to get an idea of what you will be doing in the class.

Class Structure
At the top of this page you will see a row of links labeled Sections. These are links to each of the main topic sections in the Getting Started information area. Each unit you take will have that same setup, with a row of links across the top leading to each of the sections. You will also find in the main navigation area that there are additional links. These take you to assignments and activities that lead to a grade. The first page of each unit will describe what you will need to do in that unit. For more details, look at the Navigating the Course section.

How You will be Graded
You will take a variety of tests and do a number of assignments that will be graded. You should pay particular attention to how you will be graded in the writing, speaking, and discussion areas. These use holistic rubrics, which guide the teacher in giving you a score. These rubrics can be found by following the links above. Make sure you understand each of them before doing an assignment.

Oral Assignments
Follow the link above for instructions on listening to and handing in oral assignments.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a form of cheating that can occur in any class. In world languages it has a special added dimension. Follow the link above for an explanation and a warning.

Special Symbols
Each language has special symbols not easily made with an English typewriter. Each class will have instructions on how to make those symbols and you can look at the following links as well.
