5.05 Political Cartoon Activity

In this activity, you will work with political cartoons. First, you will find out how to "read a political cartoon." Next, you will go to a political cartoon website to find a cartoon to research, analyze and write about. Finding an Alabama connection to the events or ideas in your cartoon will be your last task.

Follow the instructions under Procedure at APTPlus Classroom: Analyzing a WWII Political Cartoon.

Note: You may be asked to provide some information before being able to view the material. Click here for the APTV Registration instructions.

1. Go to How to Read a Political Cartoon.

2. Do the activities in Exposing Persuasive Techniques (must have Flash installed).

3. Test yourself.

4. Go to a political cartoon website and choose a political cartoon to print out. You may need to use your textbook or online resources to gather information about the subject. You also might want to print out the Cartoon Analysis Guide.

Political Cartoon Sites:

5. Write a paper about your political cartoon. Be sure to use one or more of these words:

  • symbolism
  • exaggeration
  • labeling
  • analogy
  • and irony.

6. Go to WWII: Alabama Remembers and look for an Alabama connection to the event or idea presented in your political cartoon. If you are able to find an Alabama connection, please give the person's name and a brief synopsis of his/her involvement in your paper.

Make sure to turn in:

  • The URL for the cartoon you find in Step 4
  • The paper you write in Step 5
  • The Alabama connection found in Step 6.
