Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Function
A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is necessary for at least 300 metabolic functions in the body. Some of the most important functions are tissue growth and repair, adrenal function, gum health, anti-stress hormone production, metabolism of folic acid, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. Vitamin C protects against pollution and improves immune function.

Sources
Berries, citrus fruits, green vegetables, avocados, black currants, melons, persimmons, pineapple, rose hips, and many herbs.

Deficiency
Severe vitamin C deficiency is called scurvy. Symptoms include poor wound healing, bleeding gums, edema, weakness, and frequent and severe infections.
