culture Die Autobahn
autobahn signThe German freeway system, known as the Autobahn, consists of around 11,980 km of road throughout Germany. The roads are well maintained and well-marked.

autobahnPerhaps the lack of speed limit (Geschwindigskeitsbegrenzung) on much of the Autobahn is its most intriguing characteristic. On approximately 2/3 of the Autobahn there is no posted speed limit. However, there is a recommended speed limit (Richtgeschwindigkeit) of 130 km/hr (81 mi/hr.), and a driver can be cited for careless driving if involved in an acident when driving over that speed.

Just in the US, there are places to stop if you are weary, hungry, or your car needs attention. They are called Raststätten, and some even have motels.

For more information, particularly on the history of the Autobahn, please search the Internet using keyword "Autobahn." It is a fascinating story.
