Overview
In marked contrast to Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) took drastic steps immediately upon assuming the presidency in March 1933. In his famous first "one hundred days," he pushed programs through Congress to provide relief, create jobs, and stimulate economic recovery. In 1935, he won passage of a record set of programs, the most prominent being the monumental Social Security Act. Roosevelt's bold experimentation slowly improved economic conditions—even as the economy continued to struggle—and gave Americans the sense that the government would hereafter take a much greater role in society.
