Several months after the Birmingham crusade, four little girls were killed in a bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Klansmen in the area, who were upset by the recent changes brought to the city, selected the church site for a bombing because of its centerpiece in the Birmingham movement. The tragic bombing in Birmingham thrust the city once again on the world stage and helped further solidify support for the Civil Rights Act.
