The Costs of War

The cost of the Civil War was astounding. Total deaths surpassed 600,000. Collectively, the number of dead and wounded reached approximately 1.1 million. Economically, the war cost billions. There was widespread destruction in the South. Railroads and industries had been ransacked near the end of the war and cities and towns burned to the ground. While the Northern economy had prospered during the war, the South's wealth declined by 60%. Confederate currency was now worthless and many Southern citizens were now poverty stricken.
