Key ConceptMöchtest du?
Most of the acivities we've been talking about need more than one person, so let's review how you'd ask people if they "would like"to do something. Write the chart in your notebook, then click on the arrows to see if you had the correct forms.

ich arrow wir arrow
du arrow ihr arrow
er, sie, es arrow sie, Sie arrow

Key ConceptDie Einladung
You will want to invite people to do things with you. But how do you say "me"? You know that the preposition mit is always followed by a dative form, so we'd better learn the dative forms of the pronouns. Here they are:

Nominative ich du er sie (sg.) es wir ihr sie (pl.) Sie
Dative mir dir ihm ihr ihm uns euch ihnen Ihnen

See if you can say "with + the following people." Write these expressions down and then click on the English expression to see the correct response in German.

with him
with her
with us
with me
with you (familiar)
with you all
with them
with you (formal)

But wait! What if we wanted to say that we are doing things "for" the other person instead of "with"? Since für is one of the accusative prepositions, we'd better learn the accusative forms of the pronouns as well.

Nominative ich du er sie (sg.) es wir ihr sie (pl.) Sie
Accusative mich dich ihn sie es uns euch sie Sie

Now try saying "for + the following people." Write these expressions down and then click on the English expression to see the correct response in German.

for him
for her
for us
for me
for you (familiar)
for you all
for them
for you (formal)

So let's put it together into one chart. Copy this into your notebook so you can refer to it as often as you have to.

Nominative ich du er sie (sg.) es wir ihr sie (pl.) Sie
Accusative mich dich ihn sie es uns euch sie Sie
Dative mir dir ihm ihr ihm uns euch ihnen Ihnen

(For those who like patterns: can you see that the final letters for all three cases of er, sie (sg), es, and sie (pl) are identical with the final letters of the corresponding forms of der, die, das, die (pl) -- right down to the added -n in dative plural? If this tidbit is helpful to you, use it. If not, ignore it!)

Practice

Schriftliche Übung
Look at each picture and then ask a friend if he/she would like to do that with you. They will respond that they would and you need to write that also. When you have finished writing the activity in your notebook, click on the picture to see a logical question and on the "Ja" to see the answer. The first one is done for you.

Dance Möchtest du mit mir tanzen? Ja, ich möchte mit dir tanzen.
