Traveling by bus is always an adventure. In West Africa, where the francophone countries are, the best time to take the bus is first thing in the morning because it's the fastest and safest time to travel. Why fastest? Because many West African countries are Muslim. Muslims are required to pray five times a day, and many African buses take prayer breaks. Prayers start at 2 pm. All the passengers get off the bus to pray for 15 minutes. Multiplied by five, that add at least three hours to a trip. So the best thing to do is to get most of your trip over before 2 pm to shorten your travel time.

Le "franglais" Repeating Practice
Some words in English do not have a translation into French. In many cases, French has borrowed words from English. Many French people do not like this because they believe it contaminates their language with words that are not really theirs. Here are some examples of these words.

le week-end
le parking
le steak
le shopping
cool
le manager
le rock
le fast food
excité/e

ProjectLe Projet
For the project in Unit 10, you are going to plan a trip to a French-speaking country. You may choose whatever country you like as long as it is approved by your teacher. You will write a 200 word essay in French that you have learned in this course talking about what you will do while you are there and about getting there. You will need to include the following in your project:

  • Why you are interested in visiting that country?
  • When you are going to go?
  • What you will pack in your suitcase?
  • What you will do while you are there?
  • What these things will cost? What money will you use while there?
  • You will include a section about the specifics about the actual trip--going to the airport, waiting for the flight, etc.

You will need to include pictures of the items you find in your essay.

There are four deadlines for the project:

  1. Deadline 1: Country idea: 5 points
  2. Deadline 2: Outline and brainstorming: 5 points
  3. Deadline 3: Rough draft: 5 points
  4. Deadline 4: Final project: 25 points

Go to Project 1B to turn in this assignment.
