CultureEst-ce que tu as un travail?
In France, teenagers do not get part-time jobs as many do here in the United States. Why do you suppose they don't?

Well, one of the main reasons that teenagers get part-time jobs in the US is to pay for what? Cars and related expenses, no? Well, since teenagers in France cannot drive until age 18, they do not have those same expenses.

In addition, the typical teenager in France will spend several hours after school studying and working on homework. Most parents tend to take their children's education very seriously and ensure that they spend time in preparation for their coursework each evening.

The baccalauréat (le bac) is a national exam at the end of their secondary school studies (American high school). Passing this exam allows students to enter the University to study. Most students are very concerned with receiving le bac and work very hard during their school years to be able to attain that goal.

Let's review verbs that we have studied in the past. It may seem to you that we have learned so many verbs that you cannot possibly remember them all. That is why it is very important for you to have an organized notebook system that will help you review this kind of information even when you are out of class. This becomes increasingly important as you think about continuing to study French for a second year in the future.

Let's focus in on what we call "double verb" constructions. Just as the name implies, these are verb phrases that are made up of two verbs. In these constructions, the first verb agrees with the subject pronoun (examples follow) and the second verb stays in its infinitive form. All of those verbs take only the two verbs--nothing separating them.

  • J'aime: J'aime étudier.
  • Je veux: Je veux étudier.
  • Je dois: Je dois étudier.
  • Il faut: Il faut étudier.
  • Je vais: Je vais étudier.
  • J'espère: J'espère étudier.
  • Je sais: Je sais étudier.

There are verbs, though, that are followed by a preposition. Which preposition it is can change the meaning of the verb.

  • J'ai besoin de: J'ai besoin d'étudier.
  • Je viens à: Je viens à étudier. (I'm coming to study.)
  • Je viens de: Je viens d'étudier. (I have just studied.)
  • J'apprends à: J'apprends à étudier.
