Do you remember doing word problems in your math classes and thinking, "when will I every use this in my life?"  Well, most of the time we don’t think about using that math problem, we just unconsciously solve math problems and use our math skills daily.

You are leaving your home for a couple of days, and your parents are going to give you some spending money.  You will be gone for three days, and two nights.  You will need money to eat daily and extra money for activities.  All other expenses have been paid for.

Think about planning out how much money that you should take with you.  Start with how much money to eat breakfast, now lunch, and ….what about dinner.  Now, total all three meals up, and decide to average up to give a little "extra" in your budget.  Now, you will need to multiply that number by three to come up with how much you will need for meals.

Next, you should come up with the activity money.  First, you must do a little research to find out how expensive the activities will be in the city that you will be staying…average up, and now, you have a budget to communicate to your parents how much money you will need.

Now, the above example is a personal experience, but in the workplace, you will be using mathematical computations daily and hourly.  You may be a cashier that "totals an order" for a customer.  Cash management is necessary in all types of environments.  You may need to complete payroll, balance the company’s checking account, work with data, create a work schedule, or many other numerous tasks that involve math.

Another area that is vital in the workplace is compiling data and communicating data to either to the customers, or the upper-level management.  A great visual aid in mathematical computations is using graphs and charts.  This visual aid is a smart and convenient way of communicating information in a simple form.  The math work is already completed for the customer or management.  Charts and graphs can then be modified to convey numerous messages.
