Assessment #1

The Scopes Trial generated a great deal of national attention in 1925. Local citizens and national media outlets flocked to witness the debate between fundamentalists who opposed the teaching of evolution and modernists who supported the theory. Each side published a wealth of material endorsing their perspective.

For this assessment, review the 4 primary source excerpts provided at the link below and complete 5.02 Scopes Trial. Submit your completed work to 5.02 Scopes Trial Dropbox.

Step Three:
Now that you have taken a look at several magazine layouts (located in the Learn portion of the lesson), complete 5.02 Magazine Title and Layout Group Discussion.

Work together as a group to brainstorm a title for your group's magazine and share layout ideas with one another. Remember that the Discussion Leader should help guide your group. Here are some questions that your group should discuss:

  1. What do you think the title of your group's magazine should be? Why?
  2. What did you like about the sample magazine layouts?
  3. What did you dislike about the sample magazine layouts?
  4. Do you have any creative ideas for your group's magazine?
  5. Did you notice any interesting articles in the sample 1920s magazines? If so, what were they about?
