The 18th Amendment One of the more complex periods of American history is the period of Prohibition. During this time, the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol was prohibited under the 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The effects of this law were as varied as the supporters of the amendment itself. The defendant in the trial was a local teacher, John Scopes, who was accused of violating a Tennessee law that prohibited the teaching of evolution in school. Though the merits of the trial centered on Scopes and his teaching, the trial itself drew attention because of the larger debate over traditional and modern values.
