What is a multi-genre portfolio?

This type of paper comes from research, experience, and imagination. Genre means category or type. A multi-genre portfolio is composed of many genres or even subgenres. As a group, you are going to research an emerging theme from your novel and produce a multi-genre portfolio, a unique project that includes different kinds of material to prove your topic. Your portfolio will be a complete and thorough analysis of your book in multiple genres. These pieces are created to help your reader understand your novel’s theme. No genre should be repeated.

What are considered genres?

journal entries biographies play map
letters speech movie menu
cards textbook articles short story invitations
schedules magazine articles talk show character analysis
monologues letter to the editor recipe news report
advertisements birth certificates parody board game
essays court documents pictures comics
poetry text messages charts obituary
song lyrics advice column brochure tabloid
autobiographies trading cards timeline wanted poster

First, visit the sites below to see examples of multi-genre projects. Select a few to get an idea of what is expected in your portfolio.

Look at the genre examples below from The Outsiders.

Open 6.01 Multi-Genre Portfolio: Genres. You will select two different genres to use in your multi-genre portfolio. No genre can be repeated in your group. When you have completed your genre sheet, go to the 6.01 Multi-Genre Portfolio: Genres Discussion and attach it to the discussion so your group members will know what two genres you have selected. First come, first serve.

You have already completed research for your topic. Now, choose the genres that fit according to the emerging theme you see in your novel. Your theme should be apparent all the way through your portfolio. Make sure that you make smooth transitions with each piece of genre. That means you will need to insert pictures, quotations, interesting facts, section titles, graphs, etc. in between each piece to create some sort of unity.
