Your course assignments may require you to submit an audio or video file. You may use any software or device that allows you to save and submit your file. However, we encourage you to choose a tool that records files in a common format for playback, preferably MP3 or WAV for audio and MP4 for video. Check with your teacher if submitting files in a different format.

The following suggested tools can be used to create audio and video files. Please note that some applications will not work on mobile devices. The first three tabs contain information on tools that can create MP3 files; the last tab contains information on recording video.

Online Voice Recorder is a web-based recording tool that runs within your web browser. You do not have to install any software to use it. When you are ready to record, complete the steps below.

  1. Make sure that your microphone or headset is connected to your computer and is working properly.
  2. Visit Online Voice Recorder.
  3. Select the Record button when you are ready to begin your recording.
  4. You should see the recording indicator begin to move across the screen as you speak into your microphone.
  5. When you are finished speaking, select the Stop button.
  6. You can then select the Play button to listen to your recording. If you are not satisfied with your recording and would like to create a new recording, select the Record button to start a new recording.
  7. If you are happy with your recording, select the Save button to save the MP3 file to your computer. Save the file to a location you can easily find, as you will need to upload this file to submit it.
  8. Submit the downloaded MP3 file of your recording to the appropriate location. Refer to your assignment for this information.

Audacity is a free audio recorder that can be installed on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. To install Audacity, read Downloading and Installing Audacity.

View Recording an MP3 with Audacity for instructions on using the Audacity program.

You have several options for recording video. You may use a digital camera, a smartphone, or your computer's built-in camera (if available). Talk to your facilitator and/or teacher if you need assistance!

Note: There is a 512 MB limit per file upload to Schoology, but you can upload multiple files (as long as each is under this file size). If your video is larger than the Schoology file limit, you’ll need to share the video file with your teacher another way, such as uploading it to a cloud storage service and sharing the link.
