Task

Lab

Complete 2.04 Gas Investigations Lab. Submit your completed work to the 2.04 Gas Investigations Lab Dropbox.

For these investigations, you will need the following:

  • 4 balloons
    • You should use regular balloons that you can inflate, NOT helium balloons or already inflated balloons.
    • You may want to get 4 to 6 balloons in case some pop too soon!

  • A camera to document your completion of these investigations

  • Space inside a freezer to place a balloon

  • Space in an indoor, air-conditioned room to place a balloon

  • Space in a “hot area” to place a balloon (examples of spaces you may use include: inside a car on a hot day, a space that doesn't have air conditioning like a garage on a warm day, or near a warm, sunlit window)

If you have trouble finding any of these materials or locations, please talk to your facilitator or teacher.

Discussion

Once you have completed the 2.04 Gas Investigations Lab, go to the 2.04 Gas Investigations Discussion and share your results with your classmates.

Your initial discussion post should include answers to the following questions:

  1. In Investigation 1, what happened to your balloon when you squeezed it?

  2. For Investigation 2, where did you place your freezer balloon (type of freezer, shelf location, etc.)?

  3. What happened to the size of the freezer balloon compared to the room temperature balloon?

  4. Where did you place your “hot area” balloon?

  5. What happened to the size of the “hot area” balloon compared to the room temperature balloon?

Next, reply to two of your classmates' posts discussing anything you saw that was different about their results and/or how different freezers or “hot area” may have affected the results. Draw conclusions about changes in pressure, temperature, and volume based on what you see from data from multiple sources.

When participating in an online discussion, you should use formal, standard English and obey all conventions of punctuation and spelling. Avoid abbreviations or symbols used in texting, messaging, or informal conversation.
