Introduction

A community is defined as all of the interacting biotic factors in an area. In Unit 1, you learned how these different organisms depend on one another for food to supply the energy that they need to carry out their biological processes. With the help of food chains and food webs, you saw how energy was cycled throughout an ecosystem. The energy pyramid demonstrated the relationship between matter and energy and how each is distributed throughout an environment.

For this project, you will use concepts from Lesson 1.03 and Lesson 1.04 to create a fictional community that could be present in an Alabama ecosystem.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Successfully complete a food web using organisms that are common to Alabama.
  • Identify producers and consumers / autotrophs and heterotrophs.
  • Identify predator / prey relationships and competition relationships.

Enduring Understanding:

  • A community of organisms and their interaction with each other can be illustrated with a food web.
