Plot, Conflict and Sequence of Events

Remember that every good short story must have a plot.  The plot of the story is most often built around a conflict that occurs.  This conflict can be an internal conflict where a character deals with battle within himself, or an external conflict where one character is battling with another character.

In our story today, you will develop a realistic plot map that is built around a conflict that could possibly have happened INSIDE THE PRISON when Alcatraz was an operating prison. You may choose to have two prisoners in conflict with each other, or have a prisoner in conflict with a guard or the prison warden.

For example, if a prisoner is planning to escape, that would be a classic example of an external conflict because the prisoner would be in conflict with the guard whose duty is prevent prisoners from escaping.

Once you determine the conflict of your story, you will be asked to name three to four events of rising action that lead to a climax and ultimately to a resolution.

Take a moment to carefully plan out your story using the plot map.

You may use real characters, or you may create fictional characters of your own creation.  You may also choose to base your story on actual historical events, or you may create an entirely fictional sequence of events for your story.

Just remember, use the information in the Daily Inmate Routine to make the story historically accurate.
