Introduction

Alcatraz Island

Most people have heard of Alcatraz Island, also known as "The Rock," through the many Hollywood movies that have been filmed about the legendary prison.

Alcatraz is located 1.5 miles offshore from San Francisco.  It has served as a military fortress and even a top security prison.  Located in the icy waters of the northern Pacific, this island has natural boundaries that make escaping virtually impossible.

The island is no longer used as a prison, and it is managed by the National Park Service for tours for visitors transported by ferry.

The prison was open for 29 years, and housed some of the most notorious prisoners of the day.  Although over 35 prisoners attempted to escape, the wardens claim that none were successful, some being caught, some shot and killed and yet others drown in the rough and frigid waters surrounding the island.

Today, we will plan and write a short story that takes place in the prison of Alcatraz.  Before we begin planning our story, take a moment and familiarize yourself with the rich history of this unique prison by reading the information on Alcatraz History. As you check out the site, complete the History of Alcatraz assignment. When you are finished, submit the completed assignment to the 5.05 History of Alcatraz Dropbox.
