Task
Task #1
- Use Schoology Messages for this task. No outside email account will work.
- Click the envelope icon in the header.
- Click New Message.
- Note: Enter your teacher's name in the To field. A list of users automatically populates as you type.
- Write an email to your teacher in this course asking him or her to write you a letter of recommendation for either:
- a summer internship, or
- a college scholarship.
- Inform your teacher by the 3.02 Email Dropbox that you have sent an email via Schoology Messages to his/her account. This step must be taken. On a word processing document, type this information:
- Your name
- The name of your facilitator
- Your school
- The date
- A sentence saying you have sent an email to your teacher via Schoology Messages.
- Submit the word processing document to the 3.02 Email Dropbox.
Your email should:
- Follow all grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules
- Include a subject line
- Include all three parts of an email
- Include all the information your teacher needs to write the letter for you - this includes identifying information as to who the email is from
- Follow the correct formatting procedures when composing an email
Be sure you consult the 3.02 Email rubric before and after completing your assignment. Make any necessary adjustments before you submit your work.
Task #2
Using the word processing software of your choice, compose a college admission letter.
Review the examples below, but write your own letter to the college of your choice.
- College Application Letter from Sample Resignation Letters.
- Business Letter Block Style from Cengage Learning, Inc..
Writing the Basic Business Letter is a good explanation of the parts and layout of a basic business letter. Visit the Purdue OWL for more information about writing resources.
Follow these rules:
- Write in complete sentences.
- Always check for spelling and typing errors.
- Identify yourself.
- Tell why you want to attend the school you are writing. Explain why you and the college are a good match. Do you have a personal connection (relatives or friends who graduated)?
- Explain what is enclosed and why.
- Make a specific request to be considered for admission.
- Start with your address, then date. After the date, skip 4 lines down and enter the college name and address. It is fine to simply enter the city and state after the name of the college for the purpose of this Task. Skip down 2 more lines and type your salutation (Dear ____).
- Compose the body of your letter. Write generally enough so that you can send the same letter to multiple colleges. You do not have to mention the college name in the body. Mention your field of interest. Customize the letter with your own information.
- End your letter with a closing and your full name - first and last name.
- Sometimes it is necessary to save a document in a different format. One reason to do this is so that the recipient of your document can open it if they do not have a compatible program. Word processing software usually offers you a choice of how to export files in different formats. Save your letter as a PDF.
Be sure to consult the scoring guide.
Submit the PDF version of your letter to the 3.02 Admissions Letter Dropbox.
Special Note:
The next unit is heavily based on ACPS (Alabama Career Planning System), which is available to most Alabama High Schools.
- If you do not yet have a login, please speak with your school counselor. You will need it to complete the next unit.
- If you do not have access to ACPS, please inform your Career preparedness instructor what career planning system your school uses. If you do not know, ask your facilitator and/or school counselor to assist you.
- If you are a virtual student, contact the school through which you are registered to receive login credentials.
Do not wait until you begin the next unit to secure your login information. You should have it before you complete this unit.
