Posting is the process of recording the appropriate part of the journal entry into the affected ledger account. By posting a transaction, you record the impact of the transaction on different business accounts.

For example, a car dealer records all business transactions in the journal and posts the journal to the general ledger. An up-to-date ledger allows the dealer’s accountant to give management information regarding sale of cars, service income, and salary and commission expenses.
