Making Accent Marks in French

TO MAKE ACCENT MARKS ON A PC (Windows machine)

  1. Hold the ALT key down while you type the corresponding 3 digit number (see below) on the number pad.
  2. Make sure Num Lock is on.

Example: to get é, hold down the Alt key, type in 130.

Remember: Accents are very important in French. They serve two purposes:

  1. They indicate a difference in meaning. Example: "à" means to and "a" means he has; "ou" means or and "où" means where.
  2. They make a difference in pronunciation.

This works for ANY program, while using a LAPTOP computer.

You might have to press the "Num Lk" button at the top of the screen and turn on the Num Lock light.

Print the chart on the right and keep it handy.  It can be used as a guide to type French characters in ANY program.
 

1.Hold down the Fn key and the ALT key

2.Type the number shown on the chart using the embedded numberpad (small blue numbers on the keyboard)

3.Release the Fn and ALT key
