  • What is the DOL?
    DOL stands for Department of Labor and is a government agency that handles many issues relating to employment.

  • What is EEOC?
    The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces anti-discrimination laws.  EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies.

  • What is ADA?
    ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act.  It is one of the acts the EEOC enforces, as you found in the previous exercise.

  • What is Sexual Harassment?
    Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  You can read about the issue on the EEOC website.

  • What is Affirmative Action?
    Affirmative Action refers to policies that take race, ethnicity, or gender into consideration in an attempt to promote equal opportunity or increase ethnic diversity. Visit the Monterey Institute and Balanced Politics websites for more information.  

  • What is OSHA?
    OSHA stands for Occupation, Safety, and Health Administration.  It is the governmental agency in charge of setting and enforcing health and safety standards for work conditions.  The purpose of OSHA is to protect workers by creating a safe environmentIt was established in 1971 and sets standards to make workplaces safer.

    Examples of OSHA’s requirements:

    • Hot water and steam pipes must be covered with insulated material.
    • Safety goggles and head gear must be worn in certain places.

  • What is the EPA?
    EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency.  Its purpose is to protect human health and the environment.  Their website is quite interesting.  Visit the EPA website and look at the section called "Pick 5 for the Environment."  (If it’s not there, choose a topic you’re interested in from the index.)  Read some of the ideas.

  • State and Local Laws
    So far, we have discussed federal laws.  However, there are also local and state laws that must be followed. On the Alabama Department of Labor website, there is information regarding Child Labor Laws. Read this information and take notes, you will use it to complete your assignment.
