Verbal communication can be very effective when you have a purpose or a plan.

A speaker’s purpose is his or her overall goal or reason for speaking.

Next, you must know your audience. You must express your subject in the way to help deliver your message to your audience effectively. For example, you would speak differently with your teachers about a subject matter than you would speak with your friends.

It is also important that you know your audience’s beliefs, values, and their interests. Find out what information your audience already has, and what information will they need. Are you entertaining, informing or persuading your audience?
